Choosing CIMA

When thinking of becoming an accountant, The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants® (CIMA®) is one of the most prominent professional bodies that one can join, (CIMA®), founded in 1919, is the world’s leading and largest professional body of management accountants. In 2017, together with the American Institute of CPAs®, it formed the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants® (the Association) to serve the needs of public and management accountants worldwide.

What does CIMA accountant do?

A management accountant’s role varies from that of financial reporting and strategy, analysis, advisory and many other aspects of the business.

What you need to become one:

When choosing to study with CIMA to obtain the CGMA designation, there are four different study levels, each with its own qualification and CIMA does offer exemptions based on training and education already obtained.

These entry requirements are set only as guidelines and are subject to approval by CIMA. CIMA is a member of IFAC and has an agreement with AICPA to serve the needs of public and management accountants worldwide. Other organisations which CIMA is affiliated with are as follows:

  • ACCA
  • AAT

Prospective members with qualifications offered by the listed bodies above, can communicate with CIMA for an assessment of current qualifications for exemptions.

Those in possession of a CIMA qualification will form part of one of the most sought-after qualifications not only in the South African and African context, but globally as well.
